Analysis of Carvers What We Talk about When We Talk...

Love cannot be defined in one sentence or even a paragraph. Every human has his or her own definition of love because people usually define love based on their cultures, backgrounds, social classes, educations, and their societies. In this essay, the main point will be the different kinds of love that Carver illustrates in his story â€Å"What We Talk about When We Talk about Love.† In Carver’s story, there are some points that I can relate to my personal experience. There are a few characteristics and symbols in the story that are really important to understand in order to define what a real love is and find the intention thrown out the story. These characteristics includes, Mel, Terri and Ed and Terri’s relationship. Furthermore, symbols†¦show more content†¦I think â€Å"shut up† was a very strong words that shows he didn’t know what a true love is and made his audience think about him as someone who can not define love clearly. When someone as a reader looks at Mel’s situation, it is a totally different kind of love. Education, background, social class comes together and describes Mel’s definition about love. To be specific, Mel is an educated person, and he is a cardiologist. However, Mel sees love as something that can be pass on to someone else, and he doesn’t really understand the concept of real love. There might be another reason for Mel definition’s of love, and the reason is Mel’s first love with his first wife (Marjorie). Mel was in love with Marjorie (Mel first wife), but suddenly everything just collapsed, and he didn’t know what cause the divorce, and what happened to his love. Mel sees love as a â€Å"memory not even a memory† (Carver 676), and that is when he started to talk about love at the beginning of the story. Mel thought about love in an educational way not in his own personal way. He defined love based on what he had learned in school an d in his educational way not personal way. In my opinion, Mel wanted to do the same thing that Ed did to Terri but in his own way. Wilfred Owen uses many techniques in his poem Dulce et Decorum est to convey the horror and conditions The poem Dulce et Decorum est is about the horrible things the soldiers had to see and the awful conditions that the soldiers had to fight through. Wilfred Owen uses many techniques in his poem Dulce et Decorum est to convey the horror and conditions of the war. These techniques will be explained and the purpose of each section will be will also be described. In the first section he uses similes, and specific word choice. This section is meant to show us the state of the soldiers. In the first sentence he uses the simile â€Å"bent double, like old beggars under sacks† which shows that the men have to a carry a large†¦show more content†¦The first is that they are so deafened from previous explosions that they cant even hear the dropping of a gas shell as the five-nines were a type off shell. The second is that the five-nines are meant to give us an image of men falling behind and no-one noticing they have fallen. In the second section the purpose of which is to describe one of the many gas attacks soldiers had to endure and the many deaths the soldiers had to see, he starts the verse with gas! gas! quick, boys! to show how quickly they had to react to the attack and to draw our attention to the verse as we start to read it. Then he writes an ecstasy of fumbling which is an odd statement as it is usually used to describe a moment of happiness but in this case is use to show the urgency of the soldiers trying to put their gas masks on. The suddenness of the gas attack hits you as it is completely un-talked about before and suddenly you have the word GAS in capitals in front of you, this helps you to understand how sudden the attacks were. In the third section, which is about the death of a man and the effect of it on him, he writes about one man who obviously didn’t get his mask on time as it says he was â€Å"yelling out and stumbling†.
